Tiny, Long Ladder

Tiny, Long Ladder | Installation | wood, acrylics | Amsterdam | 2023

The small, narrow ladder is wedged between the floor and the ceiling, standing still, lost in thoughts about comparison and scale. What does 3 meters really look like? it wonders, feeling a bit down. It's a Monday morning, rain is falling outside, and the WiFi connection is slower than usual. The stillness of the room reflects its own quiet frustration as it tries to make sense of its place in the world.

Patiently scrolling through the web browser, the tiny, long ladder begins to pass the time, seeking out comparisons to its size. It discovers that its dimensions are roughly equivalent to:

  • Three large movie posters

  • Seven concrete blocks

  • A ping pong table

  • An adult male tiger

  • Three guitars

The ladder begins to feel a little less insignificant, as it realizes that its size, though simple and humble, can be seen in many ways. It may be small in the grand scheme of things, but it occupies a space just like anything else—equally important in the little world it inhabits. The rain outside continues to fall, and the WiFi connection may be slow, but for the ladder, the idea of scale has shifted, and it feels, in some strange way, a little bit more at ease.
